This is kind of cheating, because these are two of my favorite things.
The tree shelf is one of two. They're ceramic, and my mom had them in her bedroom for a long time when I was young. When she tried to get rid of them, I threw a giant fit and took them. BoyWonder hates them. And the elephant. I don't care, though.
The elephant came from my great-grandma. It was from sometime during the seventies, when painting ceramics was the thing to do. I actually ended up with it because, on one of my many Saturdays spent helping her with dusting and laundry and other things she can't do so well anymore, I saw it buried on a shelf full of other ceramic things and almost squealed with delight. She just gave it to me.
I love the elephant, and I have a few other things that were painted either by her, or by my great-great grandma. The downside is that this opened the door for great-grandma to try to get me to take all kinds of things that she no longer wants, but no one in their right mind would also want. (Cloth calendar from 1996, anyone? I didn't think so.) But, since she's in the mood to get rid of things, sometimes I'll take whatever she's trying to push off on me and take it to the goodwill. You know, as long as it wasn't something she or another relative made themselves, because I am a sucker for retro crafty goodness.
