Tomato Crazy

Some days, I'm amazed that BoyWonder doesn't think I am completely and totally insane. We're currently trying to come to terms with the possibility of shelling out five grand to redo our plumbing, and what is the first thing I do?

Why, creating a scaled drawing of our backyard, and deciding where my vegetables will be next year, of course! But there is logical thought involved in this seemingly random chain: Spending this much money on plumbing leaves us with basically no extra money. Not anything. Not savings, not an extra bill, not a 'splurge' on tomatoes (which are extremely expensive at any grocery store) or peppers or fresh herbs, I'm talking that if we have to totally redo the plumbing, we're a step away from bankruptcy. And it will take a long, long time to build up our funds again.

So I'm going back to my seed catalogs, and kicking myself for throwing most of them away already. I'm flipping through my urban homesteading book, knowing that while BoyWonder will be infuriated if I try to do away with grass completely, but still taking a few ideas from it as I go. Next year my goal is to have a deep freeze and a dehydrator. I'm wanting to grow many tomatoes, carrots, peppers, squash, melons, berries, and herbs. These are plants that will be happy in pots or in my current soil condition, and I'm ready to give this 'self-sufficiency' thing a go.

So now I'm planning. BoyWonder thinks I'm crazy. And it's very possible that I am. I'm okay with that, though, and I think that deep down, he is, too.
